Analysis of the 20-year effectiveness of EU water framework directive and implications for the construction of green basins in China

  • This article provides an overview of the relevant concepts, basin management plans and their main contents of the EU Water Framework Directive in 2000, and analyzes the current ecological and chemical status of surface water bodies in EU. The results show that as of the end of 2021, only 36.5% of surface water bodies in the EU have reached ecologically good or excellent conditions, and only 30.5% of river lengths have reached good or excellent conditions; Only 29.3% of surface water bodies are in good chemical condition; Thus highlights the long-term and complex nature of water governance. The main inspirations for the construction of green watersheds in China are: firstly, strengthening the ecological monitoring system and appropriately adding biodiversity indicators; The second is to dynamically adjust standards and targets, and tighten pollutant restrictions in stages; The third is to manage the watershed as a unit and coordinate various regions and departments to gradually promote the construction of green watersheds.
